The National Archives' labs environment,
provides a environment space where new online projects can be trialled to determine
their suitability for implementation on a larger scale.
The arcHIVE is the first project implemented within the labs environment. The aim
of the project is to enhance access to records which are not fully searchable in
the National Archives' RecordSearch database. It includes a trial of
Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology and crowd sourced transcription.
The initial batch of lists we have chosen for the project are popular records held
in the Brisbane Office of the National Archives of Australia,
and have already sparked the interest of some researchers. Making the lists available
and searchable will help people find records of interest to access.
We encourage you to join the labs environment community and help to determine the
success of these trial projects.
